A rural tragedy with an undertow of film noir, Katalin Varga is a story about how violence breeds violence. The film begins with police, or men claiming to be police, arriving at a man's home looking for a woman named Katalin Varga. Why Katalin and her young son are being pursued is explained by a skip back in time, when we see Katalin's husband brooding over the discovery that the boy is not, in fact, his son. It is then Katalin takes the boy on a journey to meet a man with whom she has unfinished business. The lead actress, Hilda Peter, gives a spellbinding performance that keeps us guessing about her character throughout.
