The brilliant Fish Tank is the best British film of the year. At the centre of every scene is the 15- year-old Mia (Kate Jarvis, who had never acted before.) On one hand this film is sad and disturbing, but on the other fast, energetic and studded with more laughs than most Hollywood comedies. The plot shifts into gear when Mia's mother brings her latest boyfriend back to their cramped English flat. There's a chance that this handsome stranger could make the future much better for Mia and her family - but there are hints that he could also make it much, much worse. N, P, MS
